From Circuit Boards to Creativity: Novel Engineering and Arduino Trainings at the Maranyundo Girls School!
In December, the Maranyundo Girls School hosted a training of teachers in Novel Engineering and Arduino. The trainings were held at the Maranyundo Girls School over two weekends and reached 42 teachers from 21 schools, with 2 teachers per school. They were passionate about learning more about information and communication technologies and bringing what they learned into their classrooms.
Novel Engineering
Novel Engineering is an innovative approach to integrate engineering and literacy in elementary and middle school
In this class, teachers learnt the concept of using existing literature such as classroom books, novels and stories to design engineering challenges
They will help students to identify problems from the literature, then go through an engineering design process to develop suitable solutions for the book’s characters.
Arduino Trainings
Arduino is an open hardware board development enabling users to create interactive electronic objects
Teachers learnt how to design and build devices that interact with the real world
During the training, teachers designed and built different solutions:
Design a fan with DC motor, battery and paper card or water bottle
Design an agriculture solution to test the level of water in the soil
Design a smart energy solution to detect the presence of human to switch on and off the light automatically
The closing ceremony was held at Maranyundo Girls School, following the presentation of teachers in both Novel engineering and Arduino classes. It was officially closed by Linda Beardsley, one of Maranyundo’s Sustainers and Senior Lecturer at Tufts University, and the Director in Charge of Education of Bugesera District.
