Recent Science and Technology Buzz at MGS
In just the first quarter of 2024, MGS has been actively involved in numerous exciting science and technology events.
On February 11th, MGS celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science alongside a few other secondary schools. MGS students showcased diverse science projects, with notable attendees such as Minister Valentine Uwamariya, the Rwandan Minister of Gender and Family Promotion.
Also in February, MGS students led the testing of the innovative Ingazi platform, supporting youth transitioning from school to work with free interactive and applicable learning material for their upskilling. Developed in collaboration with The Rwandan Ministry of Youth and Arts, Rwanda Development Board, and UNICEF Rwanda, Ingazi prioritizes inclusivity for all youth.
During the Maranyundo Pi Day celebration on March 14th, the MGS Head Girls, Rebecca and Arlette, emphasized “Participating in such STEM activities help students become more engaged and build their CV which they use for college applications”.
On March 16th, the Rwandan Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) through Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) in partnership with Coderina, STEM Inspires, GIZ, Ministry of ICT, International Baccalaureate (IB), the Global Council Learning (GLC), and the Private Sector Federation (PSF) ICT Chamber organized the First Lego League and AI Hackathon Competitions.
At the Rwanda National Championship, MGS won the 2nd runner-up position in the First Lego League Challenge among 25 Rwandan teams and teams from Nigeria, Botswana, and Uganda. Notably, President H.E. Paul Kagame graced the event with his presence.
President Kagame underlined “Robotics and artificial intelligence are outstanding ways to learn Science, Engineering technology and also teamwork. I am very happy with the results of national program of robotics competition and the Artificial Intelligence Hackathon. I want to make a contribution toward this effort especially to the participants (Rwandans, people from Botswana, Nigeria and Uganda) those who are with us. I want to give our young people a laptop each to these participants.”
Sister Laetitia also added “Competitions like these show how much MGS students are talented, innovative, and developing critical thinking towards their future careers”.
