Makerspace Day
On March 29, the Maranyundo Girls School’s Makerspace Club planned and participated in Makerspace Day - a day where students taught teachers and students about all of the possibilities of “maker thinking”. The students created different projects using software such as Scratch and Onshape, microcontrollers, and legos.
One group used a tool they nicknamed “makey makey” where they connected everyday objects to a circuit board using alligator clips to make piano sounds. Two other students used Scratch, a coding software to animate stories and create their own online games. They even animated a short video reminding people to wear their masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many groups used legos and lego robotics to create a variety of different structures such as a see-saw and a merry-go-round, and another group used a software called Onshape to design different objects needed in school, like a chalk and a pen holder. Then, using the 3D printer, they were able to bring these to life and use them at school.
Overall, Makerspace Day was a wonderful event where the girls were able to share their amazing projects with the rest of the school. Since that day, there has been an increased interest from teachers and students looking to participate in the Makerspace Club and make projects of their own. Sr. Laetitia is now considering how the students might host similar experiences involving neighboring schools in Nyamata.
Way to go girls!
